The Radical Housing Journal will be participating in the 9th International Conference of Critical Geographies, from October 23-29, 2023 in Mexico City. As a radical collective of international housing scholars and activists, we are excited to take part in this critical conversation organised by Geobrujas, a collective of critical women geographers. We feel particularly aligned to this group’s critical perspective on patriarchy and academicisms, as it exists in our academic institutions, as well as to its questioning and reframing of legitimate spaces of geographical knowledge-production. This event is an opportunity to connect with fellow thinkers across Latin American and Caribbean territories, as well as to expand international solidarities and networks of action. We will be hosting two panel sessions that address issues of ongoing concern for the journal. The first is firmly grounded in our journal’s roots, asking participants to address the housing crisis paradigm in Latin America and the Caribbean through the imagination and propositions of emerging and alternative resistances and challenges taking place in/across those geographies. The second looks more globally at the theme of ‘lexicons’, emphasizing the importance and power of language in housing activism and academic scholarship, seeking interventions that reflect on housing-related concepts and terminologies which do not easily translate to English.
THEMED SESSION 2: Lexicons of Housing Struggle
This panel, organized by the Radical Housing Journal, focuses on the importance and power of language in both activism and academic scholarship around the housing crisis and struggles for housing justice. In the context of an international conference that will be held in multiple languages, we seek to hold space in this panel to both challenge and question the dominance of English especially in “internationally valued” academic practice around housing, and foment processes of linguistic decolonization, internationalism and counter-generalization. Specifically, we are looking for interventions open to reflect on housing-related concepts and terminologies which do not easily translate to English. We recognize the need to question and disrupt how linguistic privilege shapes knowledge production in terms of where we write from (Müller, 2021) but also in terms of the very words we use, while at the same time acknowledging that many use it as a lingua franca, including ourselves at the RHJ in our collective practice; this is, in fact, precisely the kind of tension we aim to explore in this panel. Our goal is therefore to navigate this contested terrain in an open fashion, and to collectively reflect on emancipatory ways of inhabiting this linguistic, and powerful, threshold, including the use of alternative and reclaimed vocabularies for housing struggles, discussing questions of translation, identity, colonial legacies and the coexistence of multiple lexicons —across languages, institutions, cultures and disciplines— in housing practices.

MESA DE TRABAJO 2: Léxicos de la lucha por la vivienda
Este panel, organizado por el Radical Housing Journal, se centra en la importancia y el poder del lenguaje, tanto en el activismo como en la erudición académica, en torno a la crisis de la vivienda y las luchas por la justicia habitacional. En el contexto de una conferencia internacional que se celebrará en varios idiomas, buscamos en este panel un espacio para desafiar y cuestionar el dominio del inglés, especialmente en la práctica académica “internacionalmente valorada” en torno a la vivienda, y fomentar procesos de descolonización lingüística, internacionalismo y contra-generalización. En concreto, buscamos intervenciones abiertas a reflexionar sobre conceptos y terminologías relacionados con la vivienda que no se traducen fácilmente al inglés. Reconocemos la necesidad de cuestionar e interrumpir cómo el privilegio lingüístico da forma a la producción de conocimiento en términos de desde dónde escribimos (Müller, 2021), y también en términos de las propias palabras que utilizamos. Al mismo tiempo reconocemos que muchos utilizan el inglés como lengua franca, incluidos nosotros mismos en el RHJ en nuestra práctica colectiva; esto es, de hecho, precisamente el tipo de tensión que pretendemos explorar en este panel.
Nuestro objetivo es, por tanto, navegar por este terreno controvertido de forma abierta, y reflexionar colectivamente sobre formas emancipadoras de habitar este poderoso umbral lingüístico, incluyendo el uso de vocabularios alternativos y reivindicados para las luchas por la vivienda, debatiendo cuestiones de traducción, identidad, legados coloniales y la coexistencia de múltiples léxicos -a través de lenguas, instituciones, culturas y disciplinas- en las prácticas de vivienda.
