The discursive formation of housing mobility in Sweden:

A discourse analysis of deregulatory narratives

Abstract:

Over recent decades, great attention has been paid to housing mobility, emphasizing it as the result of individual/household needs and decisions or its spatialised outcomes such as segregation. By examining documents produced by Swedish media and think tanks, this article employs discourse analysis informed by political economy to explore housing mobility as a discursive device. The analysis reveals how narratives about mobility are strategically used to advance deregulatory agendas, seeking to increase transaction volumes in the property market to enhance capital circulation within the context of housing financialisation. This approach illustrates that discourses on housing mobility are deployed as active mechanisms in the political-economic restructuring of housing.
