The Radical Housing Journal will be participating in the 9th International Conference of Critical Geographies, from October 23-29, 2023 in Mexico City. As a radical collective of international housing scholars and activists, we are excited to take part in this critical conversation organised by Geobrujas, a collective of critical women geographers. We feel particularly aligned to this group’s critical perspective on patriarchy and academicisms, as it exists in our academic institutions, as well as to its questioning and reframing of legitimate spaces of geographical knowledge-production. This event is an opportunity to connect with fellow thinkers across Latin American and Caribbean territories, as well as to expand international solidarities and networks of action. We will be hosting two panel sessions that address issues of ongoing concern for the journal. The first, below, is firmly grounded in our journal’s roots, asking participants to address the housing crisis paradigm in Latin America and the Caribbean through the imagination and propositions of emerging and alternative resistances and challenges taking place in/across those geographies. The second looks more globally at the theme of ‘lexicons’, emphasizing the importance and power of language in housing activism and academic scholarship, seeking interventions that reflect on housing-related concepts and terminologies which do not easily translate to English.
THEMED SESSION 1: Changing the paradigm of the housing crisis? Emerging solutions through radical resistances and theoretical (re)imaginations in Latin America and the Caribbean.
This panel is an invitation to discuss and analyze the struggles against the housing crisis in Latin America and the Caribbean and its impacts on local communities in a regional context. Rather than simply lamenting the current and intensified neoliberalization of the housing market, and the inability or unwillingness of state and municipal governments to adequately address and resolve the many challenges linked to housing access, precariousness and affordability, this panel aims to (re)imagine possibilities, practices and policies of home and housing that prioritize tenants, communities and human dignity. Specifically, we hope to create a space in which radical academics, activists, community organizers and others come together to engage in a conversation about what is necessary for a fundamental paradigm shift in how we combat the housing crisis in Latin America and the Caribbean. Panelists will be asked to present their research and/or prepare 15-minute responses to the following questions: (1) From your own work and position, how would you characterize the housing crisis? (2) What do you think is necessary to overcome the current paradigm? (3) What would a housing future based on housing justice look like? We welcome theoretical contributions based on concrete direct actions and empirical reflections on long-term engagement with specific action contexts. We hope, despite time constraints, to create a space in which the ideas presented speak to and promote a collective understanding of housing and home for our common insurrectional future. This session is organized by the Radical Housing Journal. We intend to produce a special issue from this panel.

MESA DE TRABAJO 1: ¿Cambiando el paradigma de la crisis de la vivienda? Soluciones emergentes a través de resistencias radicales y (re)imaginaciones teóricas en América Latina y el Caribe
Este panel es una invitación a debatir y analizar las luchas contra la crisis de la vivienda en América Latina y el Caribe y sus impactos en las comunidades locales en un contexto regional. Más que simplemente lamentar la actual e intensificada neoliberalización del mercado de la vivienda, y la incapacidad o falta de voluntad de los gobiernos estatales y municipales para abordar y resolver adecuadamente los numerosos desafíos vinculados al acceso a la vivienda, la precariedad y la asequibilidad, este panel pretende (re)imaginar posibilidades, prácticas y políticas de hogar y vivienda que den prioridad a los inquilinos, las comunidades y la dignidad humana. Específicamente, esperamos crear un espacio en el que académicxs radicales, activistas, organizadores comunitarios y otrxs se reúnan para entablar una conversación sobre lo que es necesario para un cambio de paradigma fundamental en la forma de combatir la crisis de la vivienda en América Latina y el Caribe. Se pedirá a lxs panelistas que presenten sus investigaciones y/o que preparen respuestas de 15 minutos a las siguientes preguntas: (1) Desde su propio trabajo y posición, ¿cómo caracterizaría la crisis de la vivienda? (2) ¿Qué cree que es necesario para superar el paradigma actual? (3) ¿Cómo sería un futuro de la vivienda basado en la justicia habitacional?
Agradeceremos contribuciones teóricas basadas en acciones directas concretas y reflexiones empíricas sobre el compromiso a largo plazo con contextos de acción específicos. Esperamos, a pesar de las limitaciones de tiempo, crear un espacio en el que las ideas presentadas hablen y promuevan una comprensión colectiva de la vivienda y el hogar para nuestro futuro insurreccional común. Esta sesión está organizada por el Radical Housing Journal. Tenemos la intención de producir un número especial a partir de este panel.
